Boyds Bold Blend for Coffee Connoisseurs

ISLAND MIST ICED TEA: BETTER THAN PARADISE

Boyds new Island Mist Iced Tea (code ^&%*) is now available. Our R & D lab created a product that, according to taste tests conducted by flavor panels in Portland, is as good or better than the Paradise Original Blend it is replacing. Island Mist Iced Tea is as refreshing as an island breeze on a hot spring or summer day. If the recent West Coast heat wave is indicative of the rest of the spring and summer, your accounts will have throngs of thirsty customers who want to consume mass quantities of refreshing cold beverages.

Island Mist Iced Tea is “a naturally sweet blend of tropical fruit flavors,” according to Allen Green, who did much of the work to develop the blend. It is sugar-free, and sweet enough that drinkers will not need to add sugar. Island Mist Iced Tea also contains less caffeine than regular tea. Regular and decaffeinated teas are mixed with the natural and artificial flavors of several tropical fruits.

Paradise Gone

Paradise Original Blend (codes $@& and *^*&) has been discontinued. The Boyds product is better and a better deal. It yields eight gallons more per case, as there are eight more bags per case. As Herb Baughman put it, “You get more bag for the buck.”

Earl on Ice Price

Earl on Ice prices will be increased June 1. Be the early bird, and sell as much as you can before the prices go up.

Back to the Island

Boyds Island Mist Iced Tea is in the same packaging as Earl on Ice and Citrus Spice Iced Tea (code @#*; introduced last year). The poly-pouches will keep the tea fresh for six months to a year. The pricing is also the same as Citrus Spice Iced Tea. Island Mist Iced Tea will be listed on your June 1 price pages. Each bag yields one gallon when poured over ice. There are six one-ounce brew bags in a package, packed eight per case.

They Tried It, They Liked It

We test-marketed Island Mist Iced Tea with flavor panels at a Boyds Coffee Store in Portland. Enough of the panelists favorably compared Island Mist with Paradise to convince us that we are introducing a more competitive product.

BOYDS BOLD BLEND FOR COFFEE CONNOISSEURS

Rip City Coffee, originally introduced for the Portland market in the spring, is now available for everyone. The coffee comes in 6 lb. whole bean (code @~$%) and ground (code &^## for 46/3 oz. bags with filters). Airpot labels (L60) are available.

Rip City Coffee has balanced character, body, and flavor. The extraordinary blend is rich, sweet, and smooth. Danny Raymond says, “If you took the most unique blending coffees in the world, and made a blend out of them, this is what you’d come up with.” That’s how we developed Rip City Coffee. Rob Wan adds that the roast maximizes the character of the individual coffees. He recommends, “If you really want to enjoy this coffee, treat it with respect: brew it correctly.”

The trailblazing coffee appeals to a hybrid of Scandinavian and American tastes. A panel of coffee industry experts agreed that Rip City is an excellent coffee. Four of the five panel members rated it a “10” on a one to ten scale. One of the experts said it was the best coffee he’d ever tasted. The panel confirmed Rob’s opinion that people who appreciate the best coffees will love the Rip City blend.

Although this blend is palatable to more people’s tastes than most coffees, it appeals especially to the person with discriminating taste who is looking for something that compares with no other coffee.

Demonstrate Rip City Coffee for the customer who wants something different and special. The customer does not have to be specifically seeking a select European coffee to recognize Rip City’s distinct character. Rip City Coffee should help you compete with small gourmet coffee roasters in your area.

Sales Boom with Rip City

Oregon businesses have already experienced great success with Rip City Coffee. Caffe O’Cean, a gourmet coffee store in Ocean View mall in Oceanside, is selling 40 pounds a week of the new coffee. Tom Hedges, who got the account, reports that Rip City Coffee has been their top seller since it was introduced. Customers who buy a cup of the brewed coffee are also purchasing bags of the whole bean. Caffe O’Cean expects even bigger sales when the basketball season gets underway. They sell espresso and our full line of gourmet coffees (and only Boyds coffee).

James and the Giant Hamburger, an Oregon chain with four locations has doubled their coffee business with Rip City Coffee. The new coffee is also selling well outside of Oregon: it’s been very popular in Vancouver, B.C.
